The city name is came from the ancient Veneti people who inhabited the region by the 10th century BC.

In 2018, 260,897 people resided in the Comune di Venezia, of whom around 55,000 live in the historical city of Venice (centro storico). Between 697 and 1797 Republic of Venice was a major financial and maritime power during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Most tourists begin their visits from San Marcos. Here you'll find great St Marks Square. The Square is surrounded by some of the Venice's finest architectures. One of them St Mark's Basilica, The Virgin Mary's hair. Across from the St Mark's Basilica, stands Venice's well know bell tower.
